About the Artwork

A very ancient and very quiet place, painted with a deliberate nakedness that allows the primary mark making to remain visible at the surface. Actively expressing the resonance between opposing states and the notion of a visual afterimage, the work explores how felt qualities seem able to linger in our conscious. Seemingly carrying weight through subsequent layers of colour, tonal variance, and pattern, slipping from moments of crashing hot light into dense, eerie stillness, the character of the place has somehow translated itself into paint. Despite being created with intention, I’m still quite surprised by its presence in my studio.
