About the Artwork

What does it take to mine precious rock? What are the human costs and our complicity in such a process? The natural environment is both ‘chewed up’ and forms a backdrop to such endeavour.  The large tank structure or ‘100 foot thickener’ on the West Coast mine site represents a stage in the treatment of acid mine drainage from both a cavernous, abandoned flotation plant and the depths of the mine. It is a type of liquid prism with the flow of light and reflection echoing the chemistry being pumped up across the far ridges to the Tailings Dam.

About the Artist

I've been working as an artist in Tasmania for over forty years and many of my artworks have been developed from experiences in the mining zones of Western Tasmania. Savage River, Rosebery, Zeehan and Queenstown are all towns in which I’ve worked underground and overground on my paintings and prints.
